About Us

The Christadelphians

The name Christadelphian is of Greek origin and means 'Brothers and Sisters in Christ'. The word was first used in the American Civil War when a group of Bible believers needed a name in order to apply for conscientious objection.

What We Believe

We believe that the Bible is the word of God, and contains the good news of salvation for mankind. If we repent of our sins, have faith in God's promises, and are baptised into a new life of service to God, then he will give us the gift of eternal life in his kingdom.

We base fellowship on agreement with key principles taught in the Bible, and these can be found in the Birmingham Amended Statement of Faith. The main doctrines that set us apart from other Christian groups are:

  • The Bible contains all the instruction that is necessary for salvation

  • Humans are mortal and the soul ceases to exist after death

  • Sin originates from the human heart exercising free will to rebel against God

  • God chose the Israelites as his special people and will fulfill his promises to them

  • Jesus was the Son of God, who had his own free will but did not sin

  • Jesus was the perfect manifestation of God in the flesh

  • The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus brought salvation to mankind

  • Salvation requires baptism by total immersion and a life of obedience to God

  • Jesus will return to set up the Kingdom of God, with the capital in Jerusalem

  • There will be a resurrection and a judgement of both the living and the dead

  • God will gift eternal life in his Kingdom to those who are faithful and righteous

We attempt to follow the practices of the church in the first century, primarily by meeting every week to share the bread and wine, and by studying and talking about the word of God. There is no need for a governing body or organised clergy, instead each meeting group is autonomous and runs itself. We take the position of John 15:19 that we are 'in the world but not of it' and abstain from politics, the military, and any occupation that conflicts with our consciences. We are not yet perfect, but as followers of Christ we do our best to show love toward each other and to assist those in need. The Christadelphians are a registered charity in New Zealand.

We enjoy spending time together as a spiritual family, and have multiple social events throughout the year - from pot luck lunches to music evenings and an annual weekend at Teapot Valley Camp. Add in a youth group, Sunday school, sister's class, preaching projects, and a weekly bible study class, and there is almost always something going on.

How We Live

Always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect
